How Long Does Lip Filler Last (and Why Mine Lasts Longer)

6 to 9 months is the standard. With the right technique and aftercare, many of my Norwich clients see closer to 10 to 12.

Lip filler typically lasts 6 to 9 months. The exact duration depends on the product used, the technique, your metabolism, and what you do in the first 48 hours after the treatment. Most of my Norwich clients see their result hold closer to the longer end (9 to 12 months) when we use a layered technique with a hyaluronic-acid filler that has been specifically formulated for the lip area.

I am Cristina Pardo, an NMC-registered aesthetic nurse practitioner in Norwich. This post explains exactly what determines how long lip filler lasts, including the practitioner technique factors that most clients are not told about.

The biology of lip filler duration

All hyaluronic-acid lip fillers eventually break down. Your body produces an enzyme called hyaluronidase that gradually degrades the filler back into water and basic sugars. Your body has been doing this every day of your life with the hyaluronic acid your own skin produces.

The lips break down filler faster than most other facial areas because they move constantly. Eating, drinking, talking, kissing, smiling, frowning, drinking through a straw, eating an ice lolly: all of it accelerates the metabolic clearance of filler from the lip area.

Practitioners control duration through three levers: which filler product they use, how they place it, and the dose. The first two are more important than the third.

Why the product matters

Not all hyaluronic acid fillers are the same. The molecular structure (the way the HA chains are cross-linked) determines how long the product holds.

Lighter, softer fillers feel more natural and integrate beautifully but break down faster. Heavier, denser fillers last longer but can feel stiff or look swollen in a thin lip.

The right answer for most clients is a mid-density, lip-specific product that strikes the balance. The products I use at Pardo (Teosyal Kiss, Juvederm Volift, depending on the assessment) are specifically formulated for the lip area and balanced for both natural feel and duration.

Why technique matters more

How the filler is placed has a bigger effect on duration than which product was used. A small amount of filler placed in the right anatomical plane (deep submucosal for structure, superficial dermal for hydration) integrates and lasts. Filler placed in the wrong plane sits on top of the lip, looks swollen, and breaks down faster because it never integrates with the tissue.

I use a layered technique. A small amount of product goes into the deeper plane to support the lip shape. A smaller amount goes superficial to give the smooth, hydrated look that clients notice on day one. Most of the visual result comes from the superficial layer. Most of the duration comes from the deeper layer.

Cannula vs needle: I use a needle for lips. Cannula is appropriate elsewhere on the face but a fine needle gives the precision the lip area needs.

Aftercare that extends duration

First 24 hours: avoid intense exercise, saunas, sunbeds, hot baths, alcohol, and very salty foods. All of these accelerate metabolism and can shorten duration by weeks.

First week: avoid pressing on the lips, sleeping face-down, vigorous massage, or anything that physically moves the product before it has settled.

First month: stay hydrated. Dehydrated skin metabolises filler faster.

Ongoing: a good lip balm matters more than people realise. Drying out the lips repeatedly thins the surrounding tissue and shortens the visual life of the result.

When to top up

Around 6 months for clients who want continuous fullness. A small top-up (0.5ml) maintains the result without rebuilding from scratch.

Around 9 to 10 months for clients who prefer to let the lips come back closer to baseline before re-treating. Easier for the practitioner to assess and place correctly.

Top-up appointments are shorter (around 30 minutes) and use less product. Pricing scales accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

It can. The standard duration is 6 to 9 months. Layered placement, the right product choice, and careful first-week aftercare extends this for most clients.

Most likely a thin product, superficial placement, or both. Sometimes also a very high metabolism or aggressive exercise routine. Worth asking your previous practitioner which product they used.

Marginally. Hydration helps. Lip balm helps. Avoiding sun damage helps. The biggest factor remains the technique and product.

It dissolves. Hyaluronic-acid lip filler fully breaks down within 12 to 18 months of the last treatment. Nothing is permanent.
